A Little Bit Eclectic...
The day has finally come, when I can no longer pick out a cute "matching" outfit to put on Sophia. A few days ago I had to go to the store and started getting Sophia dressed, when she decided, today was the day she was going to pick out her own outfit. Among the eclectic mix of mismatched pieces were a red and black plaid sweatshirt (her very favorite), a pink peace sign scarf, and pink heart "Elton John-looking" sunglasses (mind you the sun wasn't even out, lol). I took one look at her outfit and couldn't help but smile. She reminded me of myself. She definitely has an interesting sense of style and as much as I would have liked her to wear the matching outfit I had picked out for her, I also want to encourage her to make her own choices, even at this young age. My mom always said when I was younger, I would come out of my room in very interesting outfits, but she never tried to get me to change. She let me, be "me". And that is one quality that I always wanted to pass on to my children. As much as we have an idea of who we want our children to be, I want my girls to know that they can be themselves and not feel pressured to conform to a certain "cookie-cutter" image, and if that begins with simply letting my two year old pick out her own outfit, then that's where we'll start. She is growing more independent everyday (not sure if that's a good or bad thing), and say's "no-me" quite often, which means she wants to do it herself. As strong willed as she is at times, I love that she's motivated and determined to try to put on her own shoes, brush her own teeth and dress herself. You can see that whatever she puts her mind to, she's going to accomplish! Reminds me a lot of her daddy that way. I can't wait to see what other interesting clothing combinations she comes up with next:)
